大阪マラソン2027では、皆さんの一歩が、エチオピアやカンボジアの人々の新たな一歩になります。

Water is not the goal—it is the beginning.

Access to safe water is the first step on the journey toward self-reliance.

It means children can go to school.

Women can start earning an income.

Families can stay healthy and build a better future with their own strength.

Through our  process "from water to self-reliance”, HOPE works alongside communities so that each person can shape their own future.

取り組む社会課題｜Social Issues to be addressed

安全な水が、貧困の連鎖を断ち切る第一歩

私たちが活動するエチオピアやカンボジアには、安全な水を手に入れられないことで、貧困から抜け出せずにいる人々がいます。

貧困は連鎖し、世代を超えて人々を苦しめ続けます。一度そのサイクルに陥ってしまうと日々を生きることに精一杯になり、根本的な解決策に目を向けられなくなってしまいます。

Clean Water: The First Step to Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

In the communities where HOPE works, including Ethiopia and Cambodia, many people remain trapped in poverty because they do not have access to safe water.

Poverty creates a cycle that can continue for generations. When families must focus on simply surviving each day, they have little opportunity to invest in long-term solutions that could change their future.

開発途上国では、多くの場合、水汲みは女性や子どもの役割です。

水がなければ、毎日何時間も水汲みに費やさなければならず、女性は社会とのつながりを持つ機会を失い、子どもは学校へ通えず教育を受けられません。

さらに、汲んでくる水は動物も利用する池や川の水であることが多く、安全とは言えません。過酷な水汲みで体力や抵抗力が低下した人々は、下痢や感染症にかかりやすくなります。特に下痢は、子どもたちにとって命に関わる病気です。

 安全な水は、誰もが生きていくために欠かせないライフラインです。安全な水が手に入ることで、人々の健康状態は改善し、子どもたちは学校へ通えるようになります。さらに、女性が社会で活躍する機会も広がり、自立に向けた学びや仕事づくりへと歩みを進めることができます。

In many developing countries, collecting water is the responsibility of women and children. Without a nearby source of safe water, they often spend hours each day walking long distances to search for water. As a result, women have fewer opportunities to participate in their communities or earn an income, while children are unable to attend school and receive an education.

The water they collect often comes from ponds or rivers shared with livestock, making it unsafe to drink. The physical strain of carrying heavy water containers, combined with contaminated water, leaves people more vulnerable to diarrhea and other infectious diseases. For young children, diarrhea can be life-threatening.

Safe water is a lifeline that everyone needs to live with dignity. When communities gain access to clean water, health improves, children can return to school, and women have more opportunities to participate in society. It also creates the foundation for learning new skills, earning an income, and building a future through their own efforts.

「水からはじまる自立支援」とは？

ホープの支援は、安全な水を届けることがゴールではありません。

安全な水が手に入ることで、人々は健康を取り戻し、子どもたちは学校へ通えるようになります。そこで初めて、教育や農業、女性のエンパワメントなど、自立に向けた次の支援へ進むことができます。

そのためホープでは、地域ごとの課題や生活環境に合わせて、一人ひとりが自分の力で未来を切り拓けるよう、包括的な支援を行っています。

ホープの支援は、次のような変化につながっています

・安全に暮らせる（水・衛生）

・学び続けられる（教育）

・収入を得られる（農業・女性・職業訓練）

これまでに8万人以上が、自立への一歩を踏み出しています。

What Does "from water to self-reliance" Mean?

HOPE's work does not end with providing clean water.

When people gain access to clean water, their health improves, and children can attend school. This creates the opportunity to take the next steps toward self-reliance through education, agriculture, women's empowerment, and other community-based initiatives.

That is why HOPE provides integrated support appropriate to each community's needs and living conditions, empowering people to build a better future through their own efforts.

Our work is helping create lasting change by enabling people to:

・Live safely (Clean Water & Sanitation) 

・Continue learning (Education) 

・Earn a sustainable income (Agriculture, Women's Empowerment & Vocational Training) 

To date, more than 80,000 people have taken their first step toward self-reliance.

代表のメッセージ｜Message from the Executive Director

ホープは、「水からはじまる自立支援 」で表しているように、貧しい人々に安全な水を供給し、彼らが経済的に自立できるよう教育や女性の小規模ビジネス起業支援などを行っています。

団体のミッションと私個人の信念は似ています。大学で水に関連するエコロジーのボランティアとして活動し、日本の大学院では都市計画衛生工学を学び、その後も水や衛生に関わる仕事に従事してきました。ホープは水を通して自立への道筋を描く支援をしており、その理念に共感してくださるサポーターの方々に支えられています。

ホープは一方的な支援を行いません。現地の人々の「オーナーシップ」が重要であるとの考えから、彼らが自尊心を育み、事業が終わってからは自分たちの力で問題を解決できるよう、積極的な住民参加を促すなど事業には様々な工夫をしています。

私たちは日本、カンボジア、フィリピン、エチオピアなど世界のどこに住んでいようと「健康でより良い人生を送りたい」と望んでいるのではないでしょうか。私は皆さんと協力し合えば、この望みを達成できると信じています。

HOPE Japan works with neglected, ultra-poverty communities to improve their health and livelihoods through water, education, and community development projects that ultimately help them become self-reliant. Our mission is close to my heart, having begun volunteering in water and ecology projects at university, and eventually studying urban planning and environmental engineering at graduate school in Japan. My career has been devoted to improving human health and ecosystems through clean water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. HOPE Japan shares this passion with our supporters who help us achieve our mission that starts with clean water and has an immediate, positive impact, on reducing poverty and hunger. I believe our methodology ensures partnership with and respect for the self-determination of each local community. 

All of us at HOPE understand that all people globally have the same needs – whether we live in Japan, Cambodia, the Philippines, or Ethiopia, we all have similar wishes – may we be healthy and have sufficient resources for a good and meaningful life. I believe we can all achieve this if we work together and help each other.
