水からはじまる自立支援をモットーに、アジア・アフリカの貧困層の人々に「安全な水」を届けることからはじまる経済的自立支援を行う国際協力NGOです。

現地の人たちが支援を受けるだけではなく、事業を通してスキル、知識、オーナーシップを身につけ、事業終了後は自分たちの力で歩んでいける「自立」を目指して活動しています。

“from Water to Self-reliance”. HOPE is an international NGO that supports economic self-reliance starting with the provision of “clean water” for those in ultra-poverty in S.E. Asia and Africa.

Our projects help people receive support, acquire skills and knowledge, and then take ownership of the project, to become self-reliant and walk away on their own after the project is over.

■ 寄付金の使途｜Use of Donations

次の3つの活動に使わせていただきます。

１． 安全な水の供給

カンボジア･エチオピアで井戸や電気を使わず重力を利用して水を供給する簡易水道を建設します

　・家の近くで安全な水が手に入るようになり、水汲みの重労働から解放されます

　・汚染された水が原因で罹っていた病気の発症率が下がります

２． 女性のエンパワメント

水汲みから解放された女性が社会的・経済的に自立するためのスキル向上と自己実現のためのトレーニングをうけ、小規模ビジネスを開始します。

３． 日本国内での啓発活動

活動地域の現状と課題を伝えるため、現地の人々のストーリー動画を作成します。

Funds will be used for the following three activities:

1. Clean Water Provision

Constructing wells in Cambodia or simple water supply systems in Ethiopia that use gravity to supply water without the use of electricity.

　・Clean water will be available near homes, freeing people from the burden of fetching water.

　・Reduced incidence of diseases caused by contaminated water

2. Women's empowerment

Women freed from fetching water receive training to improve skills to become socially and economically independent, start small business, and work toward and self-actualization.

3. Awareness-raising activities in Japan

Videos and short films that illustrate the needs and situations our beneficiaries face.

ホープ・インターナショナル開発機構とは？｜What is HOPE International Development Agency, Japan?

ホープ・インターナショナル開発機構は1970年代にカナダで設立され、日本では2001年に愛知県で活動をはじめた国際協力NGOです。アジア・アフリカで安全な水の供給から始まる包括的な支援を実施し、貧困問題を解決するための活動をしています。国内では活動地域の現状や文化を伝える国際理解教育やチャリティーイベントを開催しています。

HOPE International Development Agency was founded in Canada in the 1975. Activities started in Japan in 2001 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. We work to provide comprehensive support in Asia and Africa, starting with the provision of safe water to help solve poverty issues.

In Japan, HOPE builds awareness of the needs and cultures in regions where we work, and supports water, education, and livelihood projects supported by charity events.

取り組む社会課題｜Social Issues to be addressed

安全な水の供給からはじまる、貧困の連鎖を断ち切るホープの支援｜HOPE breaks the cycle of poverty, starting with the provision of clean water.

私たちが活動しているカンボジアやエチオピアには、「水」が手に入らないことで貧困に苦しんでいる人たちがいます。

In Cambodia and Ethiopia people suffer from poverty due to lack of access to clean water.

貧困は連鎖し、世代を超えて人々を苦しめ続けます。

開発途上国では多くの場合、水汲みは女性や子どもの仕事とされています。

水がなければ女性や子どもは水汲みに毎日何時間も費やさなければならず、女性は社会とつながる機会を奪われて孤立し、子どもは学校に通えず教育を受けられません。

汲んできた水も動物たちが水浴びをする池や川の水で安全とはいえず、水汲みの重労働に追われ抵抗力が弱まっている体では下痢や感染症にかかってしまいます。下痢は子どもたちにとって命にかかわる病気です。

水は誰もが生きていくためには不可欠なモノです。

安全な水が手に入ることで、人々の健康状態や子どもたちの就学率が改善します。女性の社会進出も進み、貧困の連鎖を断ち切ることができるのです。

Poverty is a chain. It continues to afflict people from generation to generation.

In many developing countries, fetching water is considered the work of women and children. Without water, women and children must spend hours each day fetching water, women are isolated, deprived of social connections, and children are unable to attend school and receive an education.

The water they fetch from ponds and rivers where animals drink and bathe are not safe, health suffers, and resistance weakens due to the hard work of fetching water. Many suffer from diarrhea and infections. Diarrhea is a life-threatening illness for children.

Water is essential for everyone to live.

Access to clean water improves people's health and children's school attendance. Women can also advance in society and break the cycle of poverty.

事業内容と実績｜Activities and Achievements

「水からはじまる自立支援」とは？｜What is “from water to self-reliance”?

私たちは2001年の団体創設から水からはじまる自立支援をモットーに、活動地域の条件に合った方法で井戸や簡易水道をつくり、「安全な水」を届けることからはじまる自立に向けた包括的な支援を行ってきました。

ホープの支援は水から始まりますが、貧困のサイクルから抜け出せるように、事業地の人々やコミュニティーの生活状況に合わせて包括的な支援を行っています。

支援内容

・水供給、衛生教育

・農業支援、農業用の牛を貸し出すアニマルバンク（マイクロファイナンス）

・学校建設や高等教育の提供

・女性の収入創出活動のサポート

現在までに8万人以上が貧困から抜け出し、自立への道を歩み始めています。

Since the founding of our organization in 2001, we have been providing comprehensive support for self-reliance, starting with the provision of clean water by building wells and simple water systems in a way that suits the conditions of the communities where we work.

HOPE's support begins with water. But our work is comprehensive and tailored to the living conditions of the people and communities where we operate so that they can break out of the cycle of poverty.

Activities

・Water supply, sanitation education

・Agricultural support, animal banks (microfinance) to lend cow for agriculture

・School construction and provision of higher education

・Support for women's income-generating activities

To date, more than 80,000 people have emerged from poverty and started on the path to self-sufficiency.

これからやりたい活動｜Activities I would like to do in the future

水汲みからの解放、自分の未来を選択できるように｜Freedom from water fetching, so that everyone can choose their own future.

2022年時点、世界では22億人が安全に管理された飲み水を利用できず、このうち1億1,500万人は湖や河川、用水路などの水を使用しています。（ユニセフ「ユニセフの主な活動分野｜水と衛生」より）

ひとりでも多くの人が水汲みから解放され、自分や家族のために時間を使えるように、健康になれるように、そして水汲みに費やしていた時間で教育を受けられるように、現地の人々の生活に合わせたさまざまな支援を行っていきます。

As of 2022, 2.2 billion people in the world lack access to safe and controlled drinking water, of which 115 million use water from lakes, rivers and irrigation canals. (From UNICEF “UNICEF's Main Areas of Activities｜Water and Sanitation”)

HOPE projects help people in their daily lives become freed from fetching water, so they can spend time with and their families, become healthy, and receive an education for securing a better life for themselves.

代表のメッセージ｜Message from the Executive Director

ホープは、「水からはじまる自立支援 」で表しているように、貧しい人々に安全な水を供給し、彼らが経済的に自立できるよう教育や女性の小規模ビジネス起業支援などを行っています。

団体のミッションと私個人の信念は似ています。大学で水に関連するエコロジーのボランティアとして活動し、日本の大学院では都市計画衛生工学を学び、その後も水や衛生に関わる仕事に従事してきました。ホープは水を通して自立への道筋を描く支援をしており、その理念に共感してくださるサポーターの方々に支えられています。

ホープは一方的な支援を行いません。現地の人々の「オーナーシップ」が重要であるとの考えから、彼らが自尊心を育み、事業が終わってからは自分たちの力で問題を解決できるよう、積極的な住民参加を促すなど事業には様々な工夫をしています。

私たちは日本、カンボジア、フィリピン、エチオピアなど世界のどこに住んでいようと「健康でより良い人生を送りたい」と望んでいるのではないでしょうか。私は皆さんと協力し合えば、この望みを達成できると信じています。

HOPE Japan works with neglected, ultra-poverty communities to improve their health and livelihoods through water, education, and community development projects that ultimately help them become self-reliant. Our mission is close to my heart, having begun volunteering in water and ecology projects at university, and eventually studying urban planning and environmental engineering at graduate school in Japan. My career has been devoted to improving human health and ecosystems through clean water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. HOPE Japan shares this passion with our supporters who help us achieve our mission that starts with clean water and has an immediate, positive impact, on reducing poverty and hunger. I believe our methodology ensures partnership with and respect for the self-determination of each local community. 

All of us at HOPE understand that all people globally have the same needs – whether we live in Japan, Cambodia, the Philippines, or Ethiopia, we all have similar wishes – may we be healthy and have sufficient resources for a good and meaningful life. I believe we can all achieve this if we work together and help each other.
